MAGTF Demo Day

Today started somewhat early(ish). Our initial plan was to get to the airfield around eleven, but at just before nine, my husband called and asked if we could be ready in a few minutes, then from there could we be ready by 9:45. Getting three people, a diaper bag and snacks ready in 45 minutes? Sure, why not? :). Since we couldn't find earphones to cover Natalia's ears (it was NOISY down there) we hung out in the vehicle. Which, since it was around 90, was AWESOME!

There was another martial arts and dog demo today, followed by the USMC Rock Band. Now, I didn't know the words to the songs, but I attempted to sing along because it was getting the biggest grins from Natalia. She didn't care that mama garbled all the lyrics *grin*

After the rock band, the regular band played. There was a team of Marines who ran out and planted the flag just like on Iwo Jima - very awesome!

Of course, because of my position, I could only capture them from the back before they ran :).

Then came the Silent Drill Platoon. We could only watch on the jumbo screen, but they did march right past us

Finally, came the MAGTF Demo itself - and then I was even more glad we were in the car - the aircraft are beautiful, but LOUD.

Recon jumping in

After the show, when most of the people had cleared out, we got out of the vehicle for a couple minutes and Leilani got to meet a couple of police horses

The girls and I are going to go home tomorrow - I have LOTS of laundry to do, Natalia went through 5 outfits yesterday alone, and a few more today. Her laundry may consist of the smallest clothes, but it makes the biggest loads!

Operation: Wreath Laying Ceremony

Finally! Last night we made it the flag lowering!

After the flag lowering, a few of the vehicles were moved out to go practice for the air show on Saturday.

We wandered around for a bit after that waiting for the handing over of the guard from the Marines to the Cleveland P.D, with the playing of taps at 10:00. It is impossible to listen to taps without tears. Absolutely impossible!

While waiting for the ceremony at 10, we walked around Voinovich Park, then got to take a short ride in a fully restored Vietnam era jeep. That was awesome, let me tell you! Another advantage of being married to the lead planner *grin*.

Because we were up and out so late last night, I made sure the curtains were overlapping in hopes of having Leilani sleep later. We made it to 8:30! I was so glad. She's been so tired. Both girlies woke up mostly happy (Leilani wasn't too thrilled that daddy was gone, but once we got past that, we were good). Natalia woke up all chatty, cooing, smiling, and squeaking. I just love baby noises. Cutest thing ever!

Today, our big goal was to make it to the wreath laying ceremony by the Vietnam Wall replica. Everyday, a Gold Star mom and a high-ranking Marine (today it was a General) lay a wreath by the wall. A Gold Star mom is a mom who has a child who died in OEF or OIF. The Mayor of Cleveland was there today, too. Once again, taps was played, and, of course, I cried.

After that, we got back in the vehicle because my hubby needed to pick up some tickets for the game tonight to give to the people they belong to. We got a bit waylaid on our way to the ballpark and had to take another Captain over to the airport for the MAGTF demo practice. We drove all over the field, which was pretty cool :). When we got to the ballpark, we went out on the field. Leilani had a blast throwing and chasing a baseball.

After that, we went back to the hotel room, once we got there, we realized we had no key to get in. So the girls and I waited in the little "foyer" by our room while my hubby went down to get a key.

The girls and I are going to stay in the hotel the rest of the day and do the "three R's"- Rest, Relax, and Read *grin*.

Fun, Full Day

We've had a nice, busy day! We first walked over to Public Square to watch the Martial Arts demo, which was followed by the bomb dog demo. Before the demo, Leilani got really friendly with one of the dogs and his handler (who was AWESOME, by the way...great with Leilani!)....Leilani got to hold Goodwin's leash and walk him, then just hang out with him :)

There are distinct advantages to being related to the lead planner for Marine Week. After we saw the Martial Arts demonstration and dog demo, my husband picked us up in a government vehicle and we drove over to Burke Airport, which is just a few blocks away from the hotel, but with two little kids, that's a long walk :). And that is where the big advantage showed itself...we got to go out onto the tarmac (since the airport is being used, people can't go out there, so that was pretty awesome *smiles*). We got to get up close and personal with the helos, ospreys and F-18 Hornets. Leilani met almost all the pilots and crew, too.

After the airport, we went to Voinovich Park to see the traveling Vietnam War Wall....incredibly sobering!

Since my husband knows this police officer, Leilani got to meet (and pose with) his attack dog!

After that, we watched the changing of the guard at the Wall, then went to see the Osprey on public display. Leilani loved getting in it - she even got a shirt (her daddy loves spoiling her *grin*).

We're going to try to go see the lowering of the colors and playing of taps tonight. Hopefully we'll be able to make it!

Downtown

Leilani woke up super excited (Natalia just woke up early *smiles*)...today was the day to go stay downtown!!! I finished packing the car - you wouldn't believe how much stuff is necessary for even a tiny jaunt like this with two little kids. Natalia did great in the car until we got downtown...she hates stop and go traffic almost as much as I do :). Thank goodness for valet parking and bell boys to help get everything to the room. I may've over-tipped, but my keycard was demagnetized, so we had to go to the lobby - which meant getting off the elevator again, and then we had so much stuff it kept causing problems, so I thought he deserved a little extra for all the trouble we were *grin*. Natalia was extra fussy, too, nothing was making her happy. I did get a couple cute pictures of the girls:

kinda looks like she's using the computer, no?

In the afternoon, we went to go look at the display:

Then we hung out in the hotel room - Leilani played Reader Rabbit, I worked on Natalia's birth record, and Natalia slept :

)

We may be going to the flag lowering and taps later. If we do, I'll have pictures tomorrow :)

Cooking, Baking and Packing

Today we did lots of baking and cooking. We're going to spend the rest of the week downtown for Marine Week and, let's face it, there aren't too many vegetarian options from room service, not to mention THE PRICE!!!! So I soaked some beans last night and let them cook in the slow-cooker all day - I'm going to turn them into Southwestern Beans, we made some vegan bread in our bread machines for pbjs, some beans and rice with sauteed peppers (nice to throw into a tortilla or wrap) and a potato-herb bake and added in some vegetarian sausage :). We'll definitely NOT starve, and we'll save money too! After we were basically done, I decided to bake some chocolate chip cookies - I decided to use Flax Seed for the egg (for two reasons, 1-I'm not crazy about the amount of cholesterol in eggs, and 2-I have no eggs *grin*)...they're nice and big and fluffy, and taste really good, too :)

I also had a TON of packing to do...two little girls, both of whom are messy eaters - one a bit more so than the other, seeing as how she's a baby and spits up, in addition to being getting us both soaked while she's eating. That makes for ALOT of clothes to need! I think Natalia has the biggest bag out of all of us *grin*. I couldn't sleep last night for thinking of all the things I need to pack - clothes, vitamins, toiletries, activities, charger for the camera, and the list goes on. I'm the type who'd rather be waaaayyyy over prepared and have waaaayyyy too many clothes and things than run out!

Last night, Leilani decided she wanted me to pop her blood blister that she got yesterday. I got the needle all prepped, and when she saw what instrument I was going to have to use, she yelled "NO! That hurts!" - I wasn't even close to her yet *grin*. I told her it would be over before she knew it, just close her eyes. I took her poor little thumb and put myself between her face and hand so she couldn't see even if she wanted to. After I did it, she asked "have you popped it yet?" lol. She was so tough :). Later, I was cuddling with Natalia and tracing my finger around her face, I rested my finger on her nose and apparently, she loves my finger tracing her, because she moved her head to the side and up, so my finger was resting on her chin. Thinking it was a fluke, I tried it again - and she did moved her head again to make my finger trace her cheek and land on her chin. We kept it up for several minutes, Natalia grinning the whole time. I just love my girlies :). They're both so adorable and clever!

Leilani's fever's all gone, but we still took the day nice and easy (besides my flurry of activity). We played, finished Felicity's Surprise, and watched some Winnie-the-Pooh. A busy, but fun, day.

Home Again

Yesterday didn't go quite as I'd anticipated. I somehow got the impression we'd be outside in the action from 2pm onwards. That didn't happen. Instead, Leilani, Natalia and I were in the hotel room for around six hours. Thinking we'd be busy, I really didn't bring anything to occupy us. As we were getting out of the car (and I was still under a delusion lol) I grabbed one of Leilani's activity books on a whim. Thank goodness! She spent a lot of time cutting, pasting and coloring. She also loved the giant window treatments, opening and closing them. And she played "race" - unforunately, while racing herself around the room and going in and out of the bathroom, Leilani managed to close the door on her thumb and give herself a blood blister. When we finally went out to see the helos land, she spent most of the time telling everyone we met she got a blood blister and showing off her wound *grin*.

We got out to the LZ (Landing Zone) about 20 minutes before the Huey was due in. The street was all taped off with crime scene tape. Leilani kept asking why SHE couldn't go under the tape but daddy could. I used alot of those 20 minutes to explain what that tape is and why we're not supposed to go under it (and why daddy CAN go under it for right now). Finally, we heard the Huey coming in behind us. It was pretty cool watching it land in the middle of the street. After they towed it out of the way, the Cobra came in. Leilani loved getting to get up close and touch the helos. She (re)decided she wants to be a pilot. I told her she'll need to focus on her mathematics, guess what she said? "OK mama, let's do lots of math!" Made me a bit excited *grin*. After the helos were in place, it turned out they'd been put in the wrong place, so instead of using the tug for the Huey, they latched the wheels on and PUSHED it into it's correct spot. It was a bit amusing, watching them move the helo that way :).

After both the helos were in place, we went to get some dinner. We went to the Chocolate Bar in the Old Arcade - a realy old shopping mall built to resemble ones in Italy. The hotel is in there on the upper floors. Once I can upload photos again, I'll put them up here.

We got home around ten this morning. We had to stop at Kmart (thank goodness we didn't repeat our last visit there!). Leilani's sparkly jelly shoes broke while we were out last night looking at the helos so we had to get her some new sandals. After we got home Natalia was sleeping so Leilani and I were cuddling when I noticed she felt warm - she has a low-grade fever so I gave her some meds and we've been chilling in the living room.

Thanks for your prayers for my dad - he already found an apartment and can move in right away! He's quite excited to have a place to call his own!

As Marine Week Cleveland continues (if you're in the area, you should go check it out!) we'll be going down there and hanging out some more. Leilani loves seeing all the big equipment and Natalia loves being carried around in the Moby *smiles*. Who knows, if we're there at the same time, we may even see each other!

PawPaw's Last Day Here and Going Downtown

Todays post is going to be rather short, and hopefully the photo uploader will start working afor me again soon!

My dad left this morning, but yesterday, I took advantage of PawPaw being home in the morning (he's usually not since he's been working) and slept in. Natalia was very accomdating-she stayed asleep until 9:30! We actually had a fantastic night, Natalia slept from midnight to 6! Then she ate every hour on the hour from 6-9, and woke for good at 9:30, but let me tell ya, those six hours were heavenly :). My dad has a 10 hour drive today and needs prayer for finding a place to live.

We (my two girlies and I) are going to go hang out with daddy downtown today. He's going to be down there for Marine Week for over a week *sad face*. We're going to go stay down there, too, later this week :). Today some of the aircraft are landing, Leilani is super excited to get to see them, she told PawPaw she wants us to buy one of the planes *grins*. At least she'll get to see them :).
