Yoga, Veganized Comfort Food, and Short Walks

These new yoga books are fantastic. Leilani has done two pages (a is for airplane and b is for butterfly). She does not want to do one pose a week, she wants to do a new one every day! And Natalia's been having a blast with Itsy Bitsy Yoga - yoga for newborn-24 months. She's loving the fun playtime it brings and the stretches make her feel good. I can tell, because she keeps doing them and has the happiest, most content little look on her face *smiles*. Those books were some of the best things I could have bought.

Now, on to comfort foods. I've been wanting chocolate (twix, thin mints, reese's, mac 'n cheese, cheesy potato soup, etc). So, I've been veganizing them. I found a homemade twix recipe that I'm going to work on veganizing either later this week or next week. I discovered how to make the most amazing baked mac 'n cheese, I made thin mints today (and they're amazing) and I'm going to be making the potato soup for dinner today. The bread is in the oven and the pot is in the dishwasher. I'm beyond excited. Tomorrow I'll let you know how it turned out :)

Natalia and I have been taking short (20 minute) walks around the neighborhood. Natalia LOVES sitting in the stroller (we're to the point that the Moby isn't really working anymore, she's kind of outgrown it, so I'm going to have to get the Onya carrier). Meanwhile, she's enjoying the stroller, being outdoors, seeing the trees and birds, feeling the sunlight. I'm enjoying walking around and getting some exercise, even if it's just a few minutes here and there.

So, basically, we've been having a pretty good week, and I'm looking forward to the rest of it - more walks, yoga and yummy foods.

Advent: Day 8

Today, we had an indoor snowball fight. There was a picture circulating on Pinterest, and if you follow the link, it's to buy this indoor snowball fight bucket. So, instead, I scrounged up a bucket, found some old, mismatched socks that I stuffed full of stuffing, and - waalaa! - our own indoor snowball fight, for free. Leilani liked getting to actually throw stuff in the living room, but I think she had more fun disassembling the sockballs when she was done throwing them.

So far, so good - Leilani's been brushing her teeth, keeping her playroom clean, making her bed, putting her dishes in the sink, doing her homework and being kind for three days straight now. All to earn some fake dollars to buy real stuff with. She already knows what she's saving for - a needlepoint kit I got for her. Initially, I was going to put the kit in her stocking, but I thought she might appreciate it more if she had to work for it. She's bound and determined to get it, so she's cleaning her playroom as I type this. Fingers crossed that I found the secret to helping her learn to take responsibility, clean up after herself and learn about money all at the same time.

And one last thing - I LOVE her going to school! I could kiss her teachers (not literally, but I'm pretty excited here) - Leilani read me an entire little story. She sounded it all out, and read it to me. Super short, but the main thing is - SHE DID IT BY HERSELF!!!! I'm so proud, I'm going to share the whole story with you, and you can pretend she's reading it aloud to you *grin*

Dan and Jan
Dan ran.
Jan ran.
Dan ran fast.
Jan ran as fast as Dan
Dad can see Dan and Jan.

My little baby's learning! It makes me so happy, and reinforces that I made the right decision in putting her in school!

Thankful Thursday

It's been a while since I've done one of these posts! Over the past few weeks, a lot has happened for me to be thankful for

-We got a fantastic house with plenty of room. And, much to our surprise, we filled it without having to buy anything lol.

-After my grandpa died and that whole fiasco, the love and support that surrounded me was amazing.

-How much Natalia is growing. She's almost crawling. She gets up on her hands and knees, bucks, bounces, spins and backs up. SOOOOOO close.

-Leilani's love of learning. She loves learning, just not me teaching lol. So I'm also thankful for schools - she's been loving school. The last time I saw her this excited was during VBS when she was with friends and in a "school type" setting. I mean, she's bouncing off the walls she's so excited.

-A fully stocked pantry.

-Our Christmas tree! :)

-Netflix, for keeping Leilani entertained when I'm taking care of Natalia

-Getting all settled in

-Our family hike a couple weeks ago - fun and a real adventure. We took a shortcut that wound up being incredibly steep. While fun, I must admit there were times I was a bit scared, having to use a rope to keep on my feet and to get down then back up with the baby in the Moby - a bit stressful. But fun at the same time. Leilani loved it, and Natalia loved looking around and seeing so much green (we ARE in Washington State, and it's known as the Evergreen State for a reason, have I mentioned it's BEAUTIFUL here? Well, it is!).

-Leilani showing her love for her baby sister - it's so sweet to watch her hug Natalia, talk to her and be concerned when she's crying. Leilani is such a tender and sensitive child.

-Our safe journey here - it was a long trip, but some parts of it were so incredibly beautiful.

-Our first vegan Thanksgiving - it was a huge success, and even though Leilani had a case of the sniffles, we enjoyed all the food (and, for Leilani, the herbal tea for her sniffles)

-Natalia saying her first word "mama". It may be just making sounds, but hey, I'm counting it!

-Getting most of my Christmas shopping done. I can't wait to see Leilani's face Christmas morn, with all the fun stuff. Plus, I"m excited to see Natalia with her gifts - her own toy laptop so she can stop eating mine lol.

-the library. It's been fantastic for finding new books, and fun for Natalia and I.

-the new shop I found yesterday - a quilting/crafting shop, with tons of cross-stitch kits and equipment, plus quilting classes (which I'd love to take, we'll have to see if I can swing it *grin*)

-Natalia's cute personality and milestones - she threw her first tantrum today. Maybe not a huge positive, but it shows she has her own mind and knows what she wants!

Natalia's First Thanksgiving

We're stuffed to the gills over here - tofurky, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, sweet and salty roasted chickpeas, and pumpkin pie. Not only was this Natalia's first Thanksgiving, but it was her first plate of food. She enjoyed playing with the plate more than eating the food off it. After she dropped the plate a couple times, I quit putting any food on it and she didn't even notice the difference; she just kept happily dropping it, smiling every time she heard it go plunk.

We started off our day with fresh baked cinnamon rolls. Leilani ate one and a half, and Jeremy ate three (I ate two, but we're not telling anyone), so I'm thinking everyone liked them. That was kind of sealed when I was told they were better than my moms. That made me happy *grin*.

The tofurky got mixed reviews. I liked it, Jeremy didn't, and Leilani loved the fact that she could call it turkey and yet it didn't need a turkey to be killed for us to have it. Natalia just threw hers on the floor, as she did all her food.

The mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and dinner rolls were a huge success. Natalia actually had a bite of the potatoes, and a gnaw on the roll. The pumpkin pie and coconut whipped cream were a huge hit, too.

I printed off some Thanksgiving coloring sheets for the girls. Natalia pretty much just banged her crayon thing on to the paper and tried to eat the paper, and Leilani lost interest after a while. A very short while, but at least we got a few cute photos.

After dinner, and before dessert, Natalia settled in for the traditional "after Thanksgiving dinner nap". All that plate dropping, crayon banging, watching mommy cook and nursing really wore her out.

We went through our Thankful Tree and saw what we'd been thankful for over the past month. Here's our list (in no particular order), followed by pictures from our day:

Leilani:
-the world
-the sky
-the Christmas tree
-the water, sun, stars, snacks and ants
-the "Jonah" movie
-having a house, my sister & mommy & daddy

-our backyard
-for getting the mail
-the backyard
-the trees
-for our Christmas tree again

Setting Up the Tree

I told you I'm seriously in the Christmas mood! We set our tree up today, Jeremy and Leilani set the tree up while I cooked and took care of Natalia, then Leilani put up most of the ornaments with occasional help from me, Jeremy, and even Natalia (who more chewed ornaments rather than putting them up, but still...). Now Leilani's ready to wrap presents and put them under the tree *grin*

I eventually want to do once-a-month cooking, but for now, whenever I make a meal, I'm making double and freezing the second batch. Just trying to do little things to make life a bit easier.

Natalia's been ALMOST crawling all day. She gets up on her hands and knees and bounces, turns circles, and kicks. She's so close!

I know we did more than that, today, but the day got a bit derailed by Leilani throwing a massive fit and spending a lot of time in time-out. It sort of works, time outs. I'm not really sure what works with her, I just know that this isn't a particularly fun aspect of parentingh, but an incredibly necessary one.

Bnh jbn7vnmn87m - this is Natalia's contribution to today's post *grin*

We're still doing our Thankful Tree, it'll be fun to go over it on Thanksgiving and see what we've been thankful for :).

Thankful Tree

I made another project I found on Pinterest. I just went off the picure on the pin, didn't actually go to the website it was from, but if you want to check out the original, it's here. I'm doing mine a bit different, since I don't have the time to sit down and cut out all the leaves at once, we're going to put the leaves up each night and I'll cut them as we need them. Each day during November, we're going to each write something we're thankful for and tape it up, then on Thanksgiving, we'll go through them and see what we've been happy about over the past month.

Living Frugally

We're trying to cut our expenses, so we can get out of debt and start some savings. In the spirit of frugalness, I've been doing all sorts of money saving activities.

First, I've been making our own bread, well, until my bread maker conked out on me. Right after I threw out the sourdough starter, of course. Then, since we eat quite a few beans and bean products, instead of buying cans of beans, I bought dried beans in bulk on amazon, and have been cooking beans everyday in my slow cooker for the past five days. I figured that I'll save around $150 over the course of the beans' life. That adds up to quite a significant savings! I also want to avoid cans because of the BPA in the lining, I don't want to put that into any of our bodies. SO between trying to save money and cut out icky chemicals, I have my work cut out for me *grin*. I made my own "bisquick" mix today, it only took about 3 minutes.

I've also been reworking our leftovers into new meals. Like on Saturday I made baked potatoes with "cheezee" sauce and broccoli,so Sunday I took the potatoes, cubed them, tossed them with some frozen broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, carrots and squash and roasted them. Then today, I took what was leftover from that, seperated out the potatoes and blended them with some soy milk, mixed it all back together, heated it through and - waalaa! - potato-vegetable soup.

Then, I'm going to use all our boxes left from the move to make different decorations and artwork to put up around the house.

Basically, I'm just trying to look at things we don't use on an everyday basis and see how I can rework them into something we need and would use more often. And eliminate as much waste as possible. It's a good exercise for all of us in being content with what we have and creativity.

Thankful Thursday

This week, I'm thankful for:

- our new curriculum arrived

- I came up with some ideas to help me get through this PPD

- we started off today with a walk up to the store to return some movies to the redbox. Both girls loved the walk, Natalia was happily looking all over and Leilani was chatting a mile-a-minute and thoroughly enjoying herself :)

- Jeremy made it to Seattle safely. He says it's beautiful (like I knew it was) and now I'm even more excited for our move!

- I found a way to get Leilani to eat her lunch! I bought somelunch containers and pack her a lunch the night before, not ony does she eat almost all of it, but it makes it easier on me, since she's usually hungry right when I'm nursing Natalia.

- I've cut all dyes out of Leilani's diet and there's been a huge change, she's MUCH calmer. Thanks to my sil, Shannon, for the tip!

- cheap and easy meals :)

Thankful Thursday

- Natalia told me a long story this morning when she woke up, just chattering away :)

- Leilani LOVES her new cereal - I do too, since it's natural and organic and all that good stuff. She had four bowls for breakfast, and drank all the almond milk from each bowl, so got tons of calcium!!

- We got the house clean, in large part because Jeremy did so much :)

- Leilani has all her school supplies....now if only the books would get here....

- The large varity of food we've been having this week

- Leilani can operate the DVD player by herself, which means that if Natalia sleeps in, I can too!

- Dinner is in the crockpot

- Natalia's tummy isn't upset anymore

- We have lots of boxes packed

Thankful Thursday

- my moby! I know I put this one on here alot, but seriously, it's a lifesaver in nearly every way; it keeps Natalia close to me, nearly eliminates unwanted contact, gives Natalia a sense of security, and allows me to get things done :)

- co-sleeping, I love knowing my girls are safe and sleeping soundly with me. Especially while my dh is gone! Plus, I love that my body feels when Natalia's starting to root around - neither of us has to really wake up, we just nurse lying down :)

- Leilani's learning a bit about geometry on starfall.com. Not only is she learning, but it gives me a chance to read - that is, if Natalia's asleep :).

- Leilani loved VBS last week

- I got to take a few walks thanks to VBS last week :)

- Leilani's doing learning to read again, and we're getting lots more done :)

- I'm nearly all packed for our trip to FL!!!!

- for playing on the bed this morning: I'd put Natalia on her tummy on me and she'd roll off to one side or the other, and Leilani'd laugh and say "do it again!"....we played for a good 15 minutes and it wore Natalia out :)

Thankful Thursday

- both girlies slept in today!

- we had a fun Fourth

- I ordered three cute diaper covers for Natalia...it makes cloth diapering a bit more fun *grin*

- all the fun crafty things we've been doing

- that I finally found non-dairy mozzarella! I can have pizza again!

- we're getting quite a bit of packing done (although once again, I think our stuff is multiplying as I pack it)

Thankful Thursday

I love Natalia's little baby stretches- it's really cute :)

For how good Leilani's been behaving, she's been pretty fantastic this week!

For Jeremy *finally* being able to take paternity leave

All the fun we've been having this week

That we're more than likely going to be going to Florida to visit family pretty soon!

I'm making slow-but-steady progress packing our stuff for our impending but as of now undated move

Thankful Thursday

There are so many things to be thankful for, I could never list them all, but here are a few:

- that my daughters love each other, Leilani loves to hold Natalia and cuddle with her, sing to her, talk to her and explain things to her - and Natalia looks so adoringly at her big sister :)

- that there are so many awesome vegetarian/vegan food choices that are so incredibly healthy!

- for the adorable sound Natalia makes after a sneeze, half sigh half song, it makes me so happy :)

- the way Natalia loves to just stare into my eyes

- Leilani's incredible love for books and learning

- that Leilani LOVES her veggies, fruits and legumes - makes it a bit easier being vegetarian *grin*

- for my hubby, who's amazingly helpful. Obviously, he can't feed the baby since I'm breastfeeding, but he helps keep the kitchen and living room clean, helps put Leilani to bed and is truly amazing!

- for my daughters' adorable-ness :)

- for my Moby, it's a life-saver!!! - I couldn't have walked all over downtown without it!!! (or get any housework done, for that matter!)

Cooking, Baking and Packing

Today we did lots of baking and cooking. We're going to spend the rest of the week downtown for Marine Week and, let's face it, there aren't too many vegetarian options from room service, not to mention THE PRICE!!!! So I soaked some beans last night and let them cook in the slow-cooker all day - I'm going to turn them into Southwestern Beans, we made some vegan bread in our bread machines for pbjs, some beans and rice with sauteed peppers (nice to throw into a tortilla or wrap) and a potato-herb bake and added in some vegetarian sausage :). We'll definitely NOT starve, and we'll save money too! After we were basically done, I decided to bake some chocolate chip cookies - I decided to use Flax Seed for the egg (for two reasons, 1-I'm not crazy about the amount of cholesterol in eggs, and 2-I have no eggs *grin*)...they're nice and big and fluffy, and taste really good, too :)

I also had a TON of packing to do...two little girls, both of whom are messy eaters - one a bit more so than the other, seeing as how she's a baby and spits up, in addition to being getting us both soaked while she's eating. That makes for ALOT of clothes to need! I think Natalia has the biggest bag out of all of us *grin*. I couldn't sleep last night for thinking of all the things I need to pack - clothes, vitamins, toiletries, activities, charger for the camera, and the list goes on. I'm the type who'd rather be waaaayyyy over prepared and have waaaayyyy too many clothes and things than run out!

Last night, Leilani decided she wanted me to pop her blood blister that she got yesterday. I got the needle all prepped, and when she saw what instrument I was going to have to use, she yelled "NO! That hurts!" - I wasn't even close to her yet *grin*. I told her it would be over before she knew it, just close her eyes. I took her poor little thumb and put myself between her face and hand so she couldn't see even if she wanted to. After I did it, she asked "have you popped it yet?" lol. She was so tough :). Later, I was cuddling with Natalia and tracing my finger around her face, I rested my finger on her nose and apparently, she loves my finger tracing her, because she moved her head to the side and up, so my finger was resting on her chin. Thinking it was a fluke, I tried it again - and she did moved her head again to make my finger trace her cheek and land on her chin. We kept it up for several minutes, Natalia grinning the whole time. I just love my girlies :). They're both so adorable and clever!

Leilani's fever's all gone, but we still took the day nice and easy (besides my flurry of activity). We played, finished Felicity's Surprise, and watched some Winnie-the-Pooh. A busy, but fun, day.

Home Again

Yesterday didn't go quite as I'd anticipated. I somehow got the impression we'd be outside in the action from 2pm onwards. That didn't happen. Instead, Leilani, Natalia and I were in the hotel room for around six hours. Thinking we'd be busy, I really didn't bring anything to occupy us. As we were getting out of the car (and I was still under a delusion lol) I grabbed one of Leilani's activity books on a whim. Thank goodness! She spent a lot of time cutting, pasting and coloring. She also loved the giant window treatments, opening and closing them. And she played "race" - unforunately, while racing herself around the room and going in and out of the bathroom, Leilani managed to close the door on her thumb and give herself a blood blister. When we finally went out to see the helos land, she spent most of the time telling everyone we met she got a blood blister and showing off her wound *grin*.

We got out to the LZ (Landing Zone) about 20 minutes before the Huey was due in. The street was all taped off with crime scene tape. Leilani kept asking why SHE couldn't go under the tape but daddy could. I used alot of those 20 minutes to explain what that tape is and why we're not supposed to go under it (and why daddy CAN go under it for right now). Finally, we heard the Huey coming in behind us. It was pretty cool watching it land in the middle of the street. After they towed it out of the way, the Cobra came in. Leilani loved getting to get up close and touch the helos. She (re)decided she wants to be a pilot. I told her she'll need to focus on her mathematics, guess what she said? "OK mama, let's do lots of math!" Made me a bit excited *grin*. After the helos were in place, it turned out they'd been put in the wrong place, so instead of using the tug for the Huey, they latched the wheels on and PUSHED it into it's correct spot. It was a bit amusing, watching them move the helo that way :).

After both the helos were in place, we went to get some dinner. We went to the Chocolate Bar in the Old Arcade - a realy old shopping mall built to resemble ones in Italy. The hotel is in there on the upper floors. Once I can upload photos again, I'll put them up here.

We got home around ten this morning. We had to stop at Kmart (thank goodness we didn't repeat our last visit there!). Leilani's sparkly jelly shoes broke while we were out last night looking at the helos so we had to get her some new sandals. After we got home Natalia was sleeping so Leilani and I were cuddling when I noticed she felt warm - she has a low-grade fever so I gave her some meds and we've been chilling in the living room.

Thanks for your prayers for my dad - he already found an apartment and can move in right away! He's quite excited to have a place to call his own!

As Marine Week Cleveland continues (if you're in the area, you should go check it out!) we'll be going down there and hanging out some more. Leilani loves seeing all the big equipment and Natalia loves being carried around in the Moby *smiles*. Who knows, if we're there at the same time, we may even see each other!
